| About Relief Printmaking |
| Linoleum relief is a printmaking process that uses a sheet of linoleum and lino cutter. After transferring an image to the linoleum, the artist then carves away areas of excess linoleum. All areas removed will become white when printed while areas that remain print black. After the artist is finished carving into the linoleum, the block is then placed on the printing press with a sheet of paper on top. As it is run through the press, the ink transfers to the paper and a relief print is created.
In this six-week course, students will learn the basics of the relief printing process. This knowledge will be used to create a small edition of prints. Students will work in linoleum to create their own edition of prints. Paper, ink, and linoleum are provided. Each student will need to purchase a Speedball Lino Cutter prior to the first session. |

| About Intaglio Printmaking |
| Intaglio is a printmaking process utilizing a copper plate, a wax called hardground, an etchant, and a printing press. By spreading a thin layer of wax over the copper plate, it is ready to draw on. A twisted scribe is used to "draw" on the copper plate. This process only removes the hardground, leaving areas of copper exposed. The plate is immersed in an etchant that "eats" a line into the exposed copper. After the hardground is removed, ink is then wiped into the etched lines. The plate is placed on the printing press while a sheet of paper is laid on top. As both are rolled through the press, the ink is transferred to the paper and a line etching is created.
During this six-week class, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of the intaglio process. This knowledge will be used to create a small edition of prints. Each student will receive a copper plate and will be guided through the process of preparing the plate for printing. Copper, hardground, paper, and ink are provided. Each student will need to purchase a twisted scribe prior to the first session.
